Pirate Software

In addition to boosters as low-sec only industry I was also throwing around the idea of some sort of 'Pirate Software' - black codes that left you do Hackish type things.

One simple example would be to replace Locator agents with player 'manufactured' tracing code

  1. Thematicaully I love it. This would be an excellent addition to any improved Bounty Hunting improvements. Would players manufacture these Black Codes? How would you interface with them, or rather what would you 'hack'?

  2. Well that's something that needs fleshing out, acquisition would probably be via some pve activity. At the simplest they could simply be found In low-sec hacking sites, or bought from LP stores of criminal organizations. A more complex model would be along the lines of acquring access codes from the good guys and malware from the criminals which get combined into the final product by a skilled software engineer.

It's pretty easy to think of a bunch of things that could be hacked in the game -

    - locate characters

    - viewing corporate info like wallets and hangar contents

    - cracking passwords for secure cans and/or pos shields (would probably have to take longer than actually killing a pos to not make dreads redundant)

    - hiding your presence in local?

    - messing up fleet comma and making it hard or impossible to warp to a ship in fleet

    - temporarily disabling gate guns?

    Plenty more ideas here.

  4. The concept is interesting. Using this kind of software should involved a sec hit. Needs more fleshing out but worth exploring.

  5. Sec hits for software misuse, and kill rights for affected individuals. Although one could imagine bounty hunters or law enforcement being given access to certain software tools to trace their targets.

Then again, as a computer security specialist I'll tell you the most important thing when hacking a system is not to get caught, so perhaps the sec-hit depends on whether you push your luck too far and get noticed....

  6. Anything that players would actually want that is uniquely available in low sec would be a step in the right direction.

This ties in with the "Illegal Production" suggestion as well.

One current example that I think is a good idea is the gas cloud harvesting skillbooks. They sell for a very high price in high sec because they are only available in low sec.

  7. hmm, interesting idea, could possibly tie in with the "Turf War" concept (http://criminallowsec.ideascale.com/a/dtd/Turf-War/65727-9665) which requires the hacking of gates to 'capture' systems.

These could act like scripts in that you load them into a hacking module and may also lend itself to widening the variety of hacking modules, higher meta modules having more slots for different scripts (a gate hacking script combined with a masking script and tracking script lets you hack a gate with less chance of being detected and lets you see the population numbers for the system the gate links to for example)

Gaining access to corporate wallets/hangars is a touch overpowered IMO, possibly restrict it ot a snapshot view of the wallet/hangar at a given point in time.

  8. Interesting idea but needs serious penalties for 'misuse'.
